The Southern California Peruvian Paso Horse Club has an established point system which awards points for placement in classes at each approved show. On average, 4 shows per year are approved by the club. At the end of the year, the points are tallied for each horse, and club year-end awards are presented to the high point winners for the year.
To be qualified for showing, a horse must be registered in one of the national breed registries (North American Peruvian Horse Association (Peruvian Paso Horse Registry of North America), or the American Association of Owners and Breeders of Peruvian Paso Horses). In order to qualify for year-end point awards, an owner must be a member of the Southern California Peruvian Paso Horse Club.

Each approved show is classified as either Class A or Class B:

  • Class A: 80 or more horses competing at a show which meets the minimum requirements (see below).
  • Class B: 79 or fewer horses competing at a show which meets the minimum requirements (see below).
  • Class C: an SCPPHC approved show or open show which does not meet minimum requirements of a Class A or Class B show but which does offer at least six purebred classes.

To be rated as a Class A or Class B show, the following minimum required purebred classes must be available in the premium list::

Purebred Halter

  • Fillies and Mares: 3 or more classes
  • Colts and Stallions: 3 or more classes
  • Geldings: 1 or more classes

Purebred Performance

  • Geldings in Bit: 1 or more classes
  • Mares in Bit: 1 or more classes
  • Stallions in Bit: 1 or more classes
  • Performance in Bit: 2 or more classes
  • Junior (18 and under): 1 or more classes

Halter Division points are earned in all regular halter classes, zootecnico and halter championship classes.

Performance Division points are earned in classes which are not restrictive by age or qualification of horse or rider in such a way to give a horse an added advantage. Classes such as Jack Benny/Mae West, Crystal Horses, all amateur classes, and novice / maiden classes do not earn performance points even though they may qualify for championship.  Non-qualifying classes, including fun classes, do not earn points.

Amateur Division points are possible whenever an amateur rides in any class. Amateur points are earned in addition to any points that may be earned for that same class in the Performance Division. Amateur status for riders who are amateurs must be declared on a yearly basis.

Junior Division classes and awards are available to young riders up to and including age 17. Two divisions (12 and under, and 13 through 17 years) are awarded separate placings and awards. An additional competition, the Junior Medal class, is available to encourage and promote horsemanship among the juniors.
